“You look worried, my friend.” Joshua’s words dropped onto the polished patina of the dining table. “How are you feeling? How’s the recovery coming?”

“This is about as recovered as I’m going to get. I can walk with a cane. I can feed and bathe myself, and I have control of all my bodily functions. I’m told I should be thrilled to be doing so well.”

“Okay, then. How is work? You mentioned some new clients.”

Holden nodded and pursed his lips.

“Not work, then?”

Maddie passed by the table on her way to the front door. “I’m going to meet Mirabeth for lunch and stop by the grocery store. I should be back by the time you finish up, but if you need me to hurry, just text.” She stepped out the door and then popped her head back in. “And text if you think of anything you need from the store.”

“Will do.” Holden nodded to her. “Give Mirabeth my best.”

The door closed behind Maddie before Joshua spoke again. “So is it that the problem is Maddie or that you didn’t want Maddie to hear the problem?”

Holden ran his fingers through his hair. “A little of both, I suppose.”

“I’ve got all afternoon.” Joshua’s stonewashed denim eyes were a calm in the midst of the storm Holden felt raging around and through him.

Holden reached for the Bible he’d brought to the table for their study. He thumbed through it aimlessly for a moment before pushing it aside. “I think I’ve done a good job of keeping my emotions in check where Maddie’s concerned. The problem is more…”

Joshua pulled the same Bible to him and began flipping through the pages with purposeful intent.

“The problem is more that I’m struggling with my future and whether or not a woman will ever want to saddle herself with me in marriage.”

“Marriage has been a concern of yours since long before your illness. Is the problem here that you think your health will change God’s mind about whether or not He has a mate for you?”

The question pushed Holden back into his chair. Was that what he thought?

“I suppose you could argue with me, but I kind of assumed your illness wasn’t a surprise to God.” Joshua raised his hands in question. “What do you think?”

Bible study with Joshua never failed to challenge Holden. Sometimes those challenges left him exhilarated. And sometimes they exhausted him. “No. This didn’t come as a surprise to God. So what am I really upset about?” He didn’t expect Joshua to have the answer… mostly.

“You had reached a place of peace about your singleness, right?”

A man of faith, someone who relies on God in all things — that’s how Holden had always thought of himself. Faith had been easier, though, when everything in life was going well, when his biggest complaint was how he hadn’t yet met that special someone. A future bound to a cane, though, or a walker and wheelchair on bad days, cast Holden’s faith in a whole new light, and he wasn’t entirely confident in what he saw.
